SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team competed in the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) 2018 National Championships on Friday, finishing in third overall, while
Candis Kowalik took second in the All-Around competition.
The event, hosted by Springfield College, saw the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater capture the title with a team score of 193.700. The University of Wisconsin – La Crosse took second with a score of 192.550, while the Golden Eagles, the top East Region finisher, took third with a score of 191.350. Hamline University took fourth, with a score of 190.000, with SUNY Cortland finishing fifth (189.000) and Ithaca College placing sixth (188.175).
Kowalik earned second in the all-around competition, finishing just behind Lisa O'Donnell (UW-Whitewater) who scored a 38.675. Kowalik took second and earned All-American honors with a score of 38.500.
The Golden Eagles opened the meet on the bars, working for a team score of 46.900 on the event.
Miranda Shaine led the Green and Gold charge, turning in a 9.600 with
Bridgette Schaal the next Brockport finisher, with a 9.400.
Allison Hester wasn't far behind, with a 9.375 with
Taylor Keough scoring a 9.275. Kowalik rounded out the Brockport scores, with her routine earning a 9.250.
Brockport continued to roll, scoring a 47.375 on the beam. Kowalik, the defending individual national champion on the event, continued her dominance, turning in a 9.750 to lead the Green and Gold.
Shelby Schumaker scored a 9.625 with
Stephanie Mager just behind her, scoring a 9.600. Keough added a 9.450, with
Jamie Sklenar rounding out the Brockport scores with an 8.950.
The Green and Gold did what they do best on the floor, turning in the highest score of the meet on the event, a 49.050. Kowalik led the hot-scoring Green and Gold with a 9.900, with Mager just off the pace, scoring a 9.825.
Brittany Vasile and Schaal were right on her heels, each turning in a 9.800, while Keough rounded out the scoring with a 9.725.

John Feeney's squad finished out their night on the vault, turning in another high score of the meet, a team mark of 48.025. Mager led the charge, with her vault earning a 9.725, with Schumaker and Kowalik just behind her with scores of 9.650 and 9.600 respectively. Sklenar and Schaal rounded out the scoring, with Sklenar scoring a 9.550 in her first championship, while Schaal scored a 9.500.
The Golden Eagles will finish the 2018 season in the second day of the championships, with the individual competition taking place on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 4 p.m. The Green and Gold had several individuals punch their ticket to compete as event specialists, with Mager and Kowalik qualifying on the vault, Shaine, Hester and Schaal making the cut on bars, Kowalik looking to defend her individual title on beam, and Vasile, Kowalik, Mager and Schumaker all competing on the floor.
