PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The College at Brockport gymnastics program competed in the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) East Regional on Saturday, hosted by Rhode Island College, punching their ticket to the National Championship with a third-place team finish.
The Golden Eagles finished in third with a score of 190.225, behind Ithaca College, who took the meet with a score of 191.475 and SUNY Cortland who finished in second with a 190.300. The Green and Gold beat out Springfield College (189.525), Ursinus College (188.400) and hosts RIC (182.400).
Candis Kowalik earned the title of NCGA East Region All-Around gymnast, with her all-around score of 38.425. The junior notched her highest score, a 9.775 on the vault, added a 9.750 on the floor, posted a 9.650 on the beam and notched a 9.250 on the uneven bars to take the title.
The Green and Gold posted their highest score of the meet on the floor, a 48.575, the best score of the day on the event.
Brittany Vasile was the highest Golden Eagle finisher, with her routine earning a 9.775 to take fourth. Kowalik picked up a fifth-place finish on the event, placing just off Vasile's pace with a 9.750 to give both gymnasts All-Region honors on the event.
Taylor Keough and
Stephanie Mager placed in a tie for ninth, turning in scores of 9.700 while
Shelby Schumaker notched an 11th place finish with a score of 9.650.
The Golden Eagles posted the highest score of the meet on the vault as well, working for a 48.450 to best their competition. Mager led the way, taking the individual title on the event with a score of 9.825. Kowalik was right on her heels for second with her vault of 9.775, while Schumaker joined the All-Region ranks with a sixth-place finish, with a score of 9.675.
With a team score of 46.800 on the beam, Kowalik led the Green and Gold with a second-place finish, with her routine earning a 9.650. On the bars,
Miranda Shaine earned All-Region honors, finishing in sixth with a score of 9.525.
Amy Eck also finished in the top 10, scoring a 9.500 while the team worked for a score of 46.400 on the event.
With the top three teams advancing to the National Championship, the Golden Eagles will look forward to the NCGA National Championship meet, hosted by Springfield College on March 23-24. The team and all-around championships will take place on March 23, with the individual competition held on March 24.
