BROCKPORT, N.Y. – After a historic run to the NCAA semifinals, the College at Brockport football team finishes the 2017 season ranked No. 5 in both the AFCA and D3Football.com National Polls. The position is not only the highest the Golden Eagles have finished a season, but their highest national ranking in program history.
The 13 wins eclipsed the previous wins record for a Golden Eagle football team, shining a spotlight on fifth year head coach
Jason Mangone. The head coach received a number of accolades, including Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year, D3football.com East Region Coach of the Year, and AFCA Regional Coach of the Year.
Mangone is also a finalist for AFCA National Coach of the Year, a prestigious award that recognizes the nation's top coach at each level, voted on by fellow coaches. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, January 9th during the AFCA convention, and the awards show will be broadcasted live on the USA Today Sports Facebook page.
Four Brockport players also earned national recognition in 2017, as Jake O'Connell,
Adan Barrientos,
Mark Sanchez, and
Joe Germinerio were all listed on the D3football.com All-American list. O'Connell and Barrientos were also named Associated Press (AP) All-Americans.
The Golden Eagles finished the regular season with wins over No. 7 Delaware Valley, and No. 12 Wesley, while finishing an undefeated 10-0 regular season for the first time ever. They'll look to continue their upwards trend in 2018 with the return of 10 All-Conference players to the roster.
