York, PA – The College at Brockport wrestling team placed fifth out of the 19 teams at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, with two wrestlers in
Jonathan Haas and
Triston Engle qualifying for NCAA Nationals.
Haas started the 125-weight class Saturday with a round of 16 matchup with Dylan Nuttall and claimed a victory by fall in the third period. He wouldn't stop there, in the quarterfinals he won an 11-3 major decision over Jordan Burkholder to move into Sunday unbeaten. In the semifinals Sunday morning he outlasted Guesseppe Rea by an 11-5 decision. He claimed the first place finish over top-seeded Lucas Malmberg of Messiah College by medical forfeit.
Dillion Stowell had an impressive round of 16 bout winning by technical fall over Vincent Mion, but would be defeated in the quarterfinals to Ryan Flynn by decision. In the consolation bracket, Stowell advanced to the semi-finals after back-to-back victories by fall over Slade Stiles and Nick Ciaccia. Unfortunately, Stowell would be defeated by Charlie Nash of Baldwin Wallace a short time later, and dropped the fifth place dual to earn sixth.
At 149,
Sean Peacock followed in Haas' footsteps, winning two bouts on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals. After a first-round bye, Peacock won in the Round of 16 by technical fall in the third period over Alex Funderburg. The next bout would be another triumph as Peacock would advance to the semifinals with a 10-1 major decision over Joey Bush. Unfortunately, Peacock would fall to Shaun Wilson by major decision in the semi-finals, before dropping another bout in the semifinals, also settling for sixth.
Engle advanced to the semifinals of the 197-weight class after two impressive bouts. Engle won by fall in the first period in both the Round of 16 and quarter-finals, defeating Jordan Nochimson and Mason Litz respectively. Engle would continue the success as he would win by fall over John Shorter, advancing to the finals. It was there where he finally met his match, dropping a 7-1 decision to Messiah's Kyle Koser.
Nate Walker would advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket after three impressive victories. In the first round, he defeated Michael Heinl by decision, followed by decisions against Thomas Conlon and Jake Sepor. Walker, however would fall after a hard felt bout again Matthew Grossmann to end his regional run.
The wrestling season will come to an end for a majority of the wrestling team, but Haas and Engle will each get a chance to compete for a National Championship at their respective weight classes. The NCAA Division III Championships will begin March 10th at 11 a.m., and will run through March 11th.
