ITHACA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport wrestling team posted a strong showing at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday afternoon, with No. 1 ranked
Jonathan Haas leading the way with a first place finish in the 125-lb weight class.
The Green and Gold finished the tournament in seventh out of the 23 teams in attendance, and second out of all Division III teams.
After an opening-round bye, Haas posted four straight victories to earn the NYS Championship, moving to 14-0 on the young season. The senior's closest bout came in the round of 16 when he defeated Binghamton's Audey Ashkar with a 5-2 decision. He hit his groove after that, winning his next two bouts by technical fall and major decision to earn a spot in the finals. There, he welcomed a matchup with Colton Cummings of United States Military Academy, who he pinned in 3:45 to take the title.
Triston Engle was the next best finisher for the Green and Gold, taking home third place in the 197-lb weight class. The junior used a bye and a pair of wins (injury, fall) to advance to the semifinals, where he dropped his bout to Binghamton's Joe Doyle. He bounced back quickly however, winning a tough bout against Buffalo's Sam Schuyler in a 10-3 decision.
Travis Race finished fifth in the 184-lb weight class, and got some revenge in the process. After falling to Oswego's Jeff Lombardi in the second round to move to the consolation bracket, Race won his first three bouts there to earn a rematch with Lombardi in the consolation quarters. He was ready the second time around, pinning Lombardi in just 0:14 seconds as part of five straight wins to earn him fifth place.
The Brockport wrestling team will have a two week layoff before they split up on December 2nd to participate in both the New Standard Invite, and NCC Tournament.
