Brockport Goes 2-1 At WPI Duals

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 12/15 College at Brockport wrestling team went 2-1 on Saturday at the WPI Duals in Worcester, Massachusetts. The two wins came over Southern Maine and host Worcester Polytechnic Institute, with the lone loss coming against No. 3 ranked Johnson and Wales University. The wins also secure another winning season for the program, making it 54 straight, 47 of which have come under the watch of head coach Don Murray.

In the opening round against Southern Maine, Brockport won just six of the ten weight classes, but used four victories by fall to take the meet by a large 30-13 margin.

Richard Mills and Triston Engle got things started at 184 and 197, each winning by fall at nearly identical points in their respective matches to give the team a commanding 12-0 lead. After the teams swapped three points each with wins by decision at 285 and 125, Johnathon Lauricella earned six more points with his third period pin, extending the Brockport lead to 21-3.

Sean O'Hagan took the 141-lb weight class by sudden victory, before Michael Falcon earned the final win for the Golden Eagles at 165, using just 1:39 before pinning Southern Maine's Josh Smith to bring the team total to 30.

In their second matchup of the day, Brockport struggled against the third ranked team in the country Johnson and Wales. Sean Peacock was the only wrestler to come out victorious, as the No. 6 wrestler in the nation at 149 defeated his opponent with ease in a 6-0 decision. Despite his efforts, the Golden Eagles dropped their first dual meet of the season 30-2.

The team rebounded quickly however, taking down host WPI 28-11 in the final matchup of the day. After the Engineers Dan Wrensley won the 184-lb weight class by a 5-2 decision, Brockport came back to win seven of the next ten bouts. Engle got them on the board first with his second win by forfeit in the last week, before Jacob Morris extended that lead at 285 with a 3-1 sudden victory.

Jonathan Haas was up next at 125, earning his second victory of the day, this one coming by way of a 12-1 major decision. The Green and Gold were victorious in four straight bouts between 141 and 165, with O'Hagan, Peacock, Dan Reagan, and Falcon all earning wins by either decision or major decision. Despite WPI earning five points with a tech fall at 174 to close things out, Brockport was still able to come away with the convincing victory.

Another group of Brockport wrestlers will see action tomorrow afternoon, as they'll travel to Jamestown Community College for the JCC Open.
