Brockport Opens Seasons with 45 Top 10 Finishes

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's and women's track and field team opened the season Saturday at home.  The men came in second with 109 points while the women took third with 133 points and combined for 45 top ten finishes.
 
The Brockport men had a strong showing in the pole vault, claiming four of the top six spots.  Whitman Oehler-Marx took first with a height of 4.75-meters.  Oehler-Marx is currently ranked third in Division III Track and Field.  Cameron Shaughnessy and Joshua Steinman tied for fourth at the 4.40-meters mark.  Kyle Cohen also reached the 4.40-meters mark for a sixth place finish.
 
The men also dominated the triple jump, taking first, third and fourth place.  Johnny Zhang leaped 12.98-meters to take first in his first collegiate competition.  Marquise Riddick jumped 12.55-meters for a third place finish and Damian Fender leapt 12.53-meters to finish fourth.  Riddick also tabbed a fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.09-meters.
 
In the men's high jump, Fender tabbed a fifth place finish with a height of 1.83-meters.  Kevin Huber came in seventh place after jumping 1.78-meters.
 
Jon Rogers and Peter McCarty each brought home top ten finishes in the weight throw and shot put.  Rogers finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 14.08-meters and second in the shot put with a distance of 13.06-meters.  McCarty launched the shot put 13.8-meters for a fourth place finish and finished eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 12.83-meters.
 
Brockport brought home two additional top ten finishes in the shot put in Stanley Johnson and Gunner Rapone.  Johnson finished in sixth with a distance of 13.09-meters while Rapone finished eighth with a distance of 12.97-meters.
 
In the track events, the Brockport men tabbed ten top ten finishes including four in the 400-meter dash.  Ben Mertus finished second with a time of 52.13 seconds while Amir Rogers finished fourth in 52.51 seconds.  Thomas McNerney and Michael Danz finished in fifth and seventh place respectively with times of 52.51 seconds and 53.25 seconds.
 
Josh Fischer tabbed two top five finishes in his Golden Eagle debut.  Fischer tabbed a third place finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 23.21 seconds.  In the 60-meter hurdles, Fischer came in fifth place with a time of 8.85 seconds.
 
Amir Rogers also brought home a seventh place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.09 seconds.  Tom Nolan finished in eighth place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.42 seconds.
 
Brockport tabbed a sixth and eighth place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.  The team of Fischer, Rogers, Mertus and McNerney came in sixth place with a time of 3:32.71 seconds while David Betts, Danz, Nolan and Jordan Braimen came in eighth place.
 
On the women's side, Marisa Gosdeck tabbed three top three finishes.  Gosdeck took second in the 60-meter hurdles and second in the high jump.  On the track, Gosdeck teamed up with Kate Hochbrueckner, Jennifer Smithers and Therez Young for a third place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
 
In the high jump, Brockport took fourth place behind a 1.50-meter jump from Hayley Johnston.  The Golden Eagles tabbed a third and fourth place finish in the long jump.  Alex Kober came in third with a distance of 4.91-meters while Lisa Huynh came in fourth with a distance of 4.83-meters.
 
The Golden Eagles earned three top ten finishes in the triple jump.  Hailey Smith came in fourth with a distance of 10.66-meters, Kober came in fifth with 10.40-meters and Huynh came in eighth with 9.78-meters.
 
Four Golden Eagles finished in the top six in the weight throw.  Mariah Mays tabbed a second place finish with a distance of 15.10-meters in her Brockport debut.  Bernice Dumbleton took third with 14.18-meters, Savannah Cook took fourth with 14.08-meters and Alise Murray took sixth with 12.94-meters.
 
On the track, the women tabbed six top eight finishes.  Cynthia John-Ogam took sixth in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 60-meter dash.  Taryn Prutsman took eighth in the 200-meter dash while Sha'Nice Hamilton took fourth in the 60-meter dash.
 
In the 400-meter run, Brockport took third and seventh.  Therez Young finished in 1:02.99 seconds while Jen Smithers finished in 1:06.57 seconds.
 
"I was very pleased with today's meet.  We looked strong across the board and saw some early successes," remarked Head Coach Danielle Novara.  "At the end of the day it was an incredible experience for our team to witness a high level of athleticism and success in the venue we call home."
 
The Golden Eagles had the unique opportunity to watch an Olympic Gold medalist compete in their own meet today.  Pole vaulter Jen Suhr competed and set a new facility record with a height of 4.80-meters.


Today's meet concludes the track and field competition for the Golden Eagles this year.  Their next meet will be Jan. 16th at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational.
