Box Score
Senior Kyle Carman (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) had three tackles, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and two pass breakups leading a dominating defensive effort for The College at Brockport Football team Saturday as the Golden Eagles opened the season with a 30-2 victory over Lycoming College in a non-conference game played at Rochester's Fauver Stadium.
Carman made an impact in the opening drive of the game with an interception stopping the first drive of the game for Lycoming (0-1). In the second Warrior drive of the game, Carman had two big tackles including a quarterback sack blitzing from his defensive back position.
On the ensuing Brockport (1-0) drive, freshman Tyler Perna (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) connected on a 27-yard field goal for a 3-0 Brockport lead.
The score remained 3-0 for the remainder of the first half in the defensive battle before Brockport opened up the scoring in the third quarter. On its second drive of the half, Brockport took the ball 72 yards down the field capping the scoring drive with a Shireem Cobb (Valley Stream, NY/Sewanaka) dive over the offensive line for the first touchdown of the game.
The extra point attempt was blocked in the middle of the line and the loose ball was recovered by Lycoming and Matt Malecki ran the length of the field for the defensive extra point putting the Warriors on the board.
The next Brockport drive also resulted in points as sophomore quarterback Ty Stoldt (Alden, NY/Alden) capped a six-play drive with a two-yard scoring pass to Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) giving Brockport a 16-2 lead with 1:53 to play in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Stoldt started a drive from midfield but after a sack, incomplete pass, a holding penalty and a 10-yard completion to Eric Malave (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) Brockport called a timeout facing a third and 10 from the Lycoming 47. The third-down play designed in the timeout worked as Stoldt found senior Darryl Thompson (Rochester, NY/Marshall) down the middle of the field as Thompson made the catch and outraced the defenders to the end zone for the touchdown and a 23-2 Brockport lead.
With just over five minutes to play, junior tailback Tyrone Nichols (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) had his best run of the day breaking up the middle and then to the sideline where he broke four tackles and raced in for a 60-yard TD run to cap the Brockport scoring.
Stoldt finished with 273 yards passing on 17-of-30 attempts with a pair of touchdowns and Nichols had 126 yards on 23 carries. Malave had a team-high five receptions and Mrozek finished with 90 yards on four catches.
Defensively, senior Johnny O'Hagan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) led the way with nine tackles, sophomore Tarik Bennett (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mt. St. Michael) had two sacks while Carman and Jesse Galvin (Leicester, NY/York) each had an interception.
