Ellis and Wilkinson Win Individual Titles

Brockport to send three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships

Matt Ellis won the 125-pound title at the NCAA Mideast Regional

Sophomore Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) and junior John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) each won individual titles for The College at Brockport Wrestling team to advance to the NCAA Division III Championships and freshman Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) took second place and also earned an NCAA berth as the Golden Eagles competed at the Mideast Regional Championship and NCAA qualifying tournament Saturday at Ohio Northern University.

Brockport finished third as a team with 83.5 points. Elizabethtown won the team competition with 101 points followed by Mount Union (93). The Golden Eagles finished ahead of Heidelberg (75.5), Messiah (73), Ohio Northern (73), Waynesburg (65.5), York (60), Thiel (54), John Carroll (45), Washington & Jefferson (35), Lycoming (28.5), Mount St. Joseph (27.5), Muskingum (18), Case Western (13) and RIT (13).

At 125 pounds, the top-seeded Ellis opened with an 18-5 major decision and added an 8-2 decision and an 8-4 decision to advance to the championship bout where he scored an exciting 4-3 victory over the No. 2 seed Jacob Spearman from Washington and Jefferson for the championship and the automatic berth in the NCAA Championships.

In the heavyweight division, Wilkinson continued his streak of win as he entered the tournament with 20 consecutive victories and posted decisions in each of his first three bouts to advance to the championship round. He won decisions of 4-3, 3-1 and 7-4 en route to the title bout. In the championship bout, Wilkinson took a 2-2 tie into overtime and scored a takedown for a sudden victory 4-2 decision.

The 141 bracket was nearly one of the biggest upsets of the day as No. 7 seed Dyer scored a major decision and two decisions to advance to the championship bout before being pinned in the title match. His second place finish still qualified him for the NCAA Championships as the top three wrestlers from each bracket advanced to the National Championship Tournament.

In the 133-pound bracket James McCabe (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) won his first match with a 14-5 major decision over the No. 7 seeded wrestler from Heidelburg. A 9-2 loss in the second bout of the day dropped McCabe into the consolation bracket where he recorded a 12-2 major decision before falling by a 10-3 score eliminating him from the tournament.

At 149, senior Eliah Golding (Albany, NY/Colonie) made an early run winning his first two bouts by decision to put him into the championship semifinal round. A 7-3 loss to the top seeded wrestler in the bracket dropped him into the consolation side of the bracket where he landed in the fifth-place match and lost an overtime match 3-2 on tie-breaker criteria to finish in sixth place.

Freshman Adam Troy (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) wrestled up a weight class at 157 pounds and dropped his first two bouts.

Freshman Aaron Dudley (Hudson Falls, NY/Hudson Falls) lost his first bout in the 165-pound bracket but battled back with a pair of decisions including one in overtime and tie breaker criteria to put himself in position for an NCAA spot in the consolation semifinals. A 4-1 loss dropped Dudley into the fifth place bout where he won by forfeit.

At 174 pounds, Clayton Neivert (Ossining, NY/Ossining) recorded a pair of pins in the consolation bracket but two close losses – a 3-2 decision in his first bout and a 5-2 decision in the consolation quarterfinals ended his day.

Wrestling up a class at 184 pounds, Nick Joy (Lyndonville, NY/Medina) won his first bout but was pinned with five second left in the third period of his second bout and then dropped an 11-9 decision in the consolation bracket to end his run.

At 197 pounds, Matthew Lashway (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) won his first bout of the day before losing a very close overtime, tie-breaker match in the championship quarterfinals but rebounded to post two major decision victories and a 10-7 decision win to put him into the third place match where he lost and finished fourth overall.
