Sophomore Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) won a pair of matches advancing to the consolation semifinals and clinched an All-American level finish for The College at Brockport Wrestling team at the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships Friday afternoon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Junior John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) and freshman Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) each won matches as well for the Golden Eagles but were both eliminated from the competition late on the first day of action. The tournament continues Saturday.
Ellis won his first match of the tournament with a 5-4 decision over Springfield's Tom Casper and advanced to face the top seed in the bracket. A loss in that match dropped Ellis into the wrestleback portion of the bracket when he scored a 5-1 victory over Jacob Spearman from Washington and Jefferson. Ellis is set to face Issac Balsiger from Wisconsin-La Crosse Saturday morning.
At 141 pounds, Dyer won his first match with a 5-2 decision over Nathaniel Behnke from Wisconsin-Eau Claire but then dropped a 6-1 decision to the No. 4 seed in the bracket, Jake Fredrickson from Wisconsin-Whitewater. In the wrestleback bracket, Dyer scored a 15-2 major decision over Tyler Henken from Wisconsin-Plattville before dropping a 4-2 decision in the closing seconds against Ces Anista from Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Wilkinson fell in his first bout with a tight 3-2 decision to Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Tom Foote to drop into the wrestleback bracket. Wilkinson rebounded with a 4-3 victory in his first consolation match over John Scepaniak from St. John's (MN) advancing to face Ryan Fank from Wartburg. Wilkinson was injured during the match and lost by injury default 3:10 into the contest to end his day.
