After a pair of wins Friday assured sophomore Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) an All-American award at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, Ellis completed his tournament run with an eighth-place finish for The College at Brockport Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Ellis dropped a close 5-3 decision to Issac Balsiger from Wisconsin-La Crosse to start the day with the loss dropping him into the seventh-place bout. A loss in that match put Ellis on the podium in the eighth-place position.
The All-American award brings the total won under Head Coach Don Murray to 133 as the veteran coach completed his 43rd season at the helm of the Brockport program.
On Friday, Ellis won his first match of the tournament with a 5-4 decision over Springfield's Tom Casper and advanced to face the top seed in the bracket. A loss in that match dropped Ellis into the wrestleback portion of the bracket when he scored a 5-1 victory over Jacob Spearman from Washington and Jefferson.
Ellis was joined by freshman Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) and John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) at the championships. Both Dyer and Wilkinson managed wins on Friday but did not qualify for the Saturday competition.
