Michael Leonard (Levittown, NY/W.T. Clarke) and freshman
Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) opened the Virginia Duals with three straight major decision victories to lead The College at Brockport Wrestling team to an opening round 39-10 victory over Central Florida Friday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Virginia.
Brockport (2-0) will face Nassau Community College at 2 pm Saturday in the tournament semifinals. A win over Nassau CC would land the Golden Eagles in the championship match of the tournament at 8:30 pm Saturday. Nassau defeated the Apprentice School 43-0 to advance to the semifinal round. In the other half of the bracket, Liberty University upset top seeded Roger Williams 26-17 while Stevens Institute of Technology advanced with a 25-13 win over Anderson University.
Brockport faced Nassau CC last year and won a close 21-20 decision to capture the title.
Against Central Florida, Ellis scored a 19-7 major decision victory allowing all seven points on escapes after Ellis had recorded takedowns. Leonard followed with a 13-0 major decision as he recorded near fall points at the end of the second and third periods. Dyer won a 10-0 major decision at 141 pounds and nearly pinned his opponent in the final seconds of the third period.
Senior
Eliah Golding (Albany, NY/Colonie) won a 4-1 decision at 149-pounds and 157-pounder
Josh Halladay (Chenango Forks, NY/Johnson City) was ahead in his match before his opponent was injured and could not continue giving Brockport a 21-0 lead in the match.
Central Florida battled back with a major decision at 165 pounds and then scored a pin at 174 pounds to cut the lead to 21-10 before Brockport finished off the match with three consecutive pins. Sophomore
Richie Childs (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) pinned his opponent in 6:09 at the 184 pound classification. Freshman
Matthew Lashway (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) scored a fall in 2:14 and junior
Pat Krenz (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) closed out the match with a pin in 2:57 giving Brockport the 39-10 victory.
