Golden Eagles Season Comes to an End

Brockport falls to Oneonta in the final regular season game

The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team dropped its' final game of the season to the Oneonta Red Dragons on Saturday, falling 16-12 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest. The two teams were vying for the fourth and final playoff spot in the SUNYAC Tournament.

Brendon Rothfuss (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored a career-high five goals on the day to pace the Golden Eagles attack. Rothfuss scored the first and the last goal for Brockport on the day but was not enough to carry the Golden Eagles into the playoffs. Brockport leading scorer Jesse Elliott (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) netted two goals for the Golden Eagles who finish the season at 5-10 overall.

After Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Rothfuss put Brockport on the board with an unassisted goal at the 8:46 mark of the first period. Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) tied the game up at two with a goal just over a minute later. After two Oneonta goals, Alex Austin (Rochester, NY/Trinity-Pawling) brought Brockport back to within one with a goal in the closing minutes of the quarter.

The Red Dragons scored four of the first five goals to open the second quarter but Rothfuss, Matt Andon-McLane (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and Elliott, three of the top four scorers on Brockport this season, scored three straight to bring Brockport to within one, 8-7. Oneonta closed out the first half with two goals, including a score with 58 seconds left and went into halftime with a 10-7 lead.

Brockport fell quickly fell behind with two goals from Oneonta in the first two minutes of the second half. The Golden Eagles refused to let go, scoring four straight goals to close out the third quarter and open the fourth as Brockport trailed by just one with 13:54 to play in the final frame.

The Golden Eagles kept the Red Dragons scoreless for the next 8:19, but Oneonta unleashed three straight goals to pull away in the final five minutes. Rothfuss scored with 1:17 to play but the clock ran out on Brockport's playoff chances.

With the two goals on the day, Elliott finishes the season with 35, tops in the SUNYAC. The junior also currently leads the conference with 2.36 goals per game and is fourth with 3.29 points per game.
