Senior Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) scored four goals and added three assists to lead The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team to a season-opening 16-10 victory over Keene (NH) State Monday night in West Palm Beach, Florida as part of the team's annual Spring Training trip to Florida.
Brockport (1-0) took an early 2-0 lead with goals by Karen Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Piraino but Keene State (0-1) came back with two goals in a span of 1:04 to knot the game. Brockport scored four of the next five goals through the middle of the first half with two coming from the stick of Piraino pushing the Brockport lead to 6-3 with 3:15 remaining in the half.
Two goals by Keene win the final 1:20 trimmed the lead but Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) scored with six seconds left in the half to give Brockport a 7-5 lead as the teams entered the halftime intermission.
In the second half, Brockport scored the first six goals of the half to take a commanding 13-5 lead. Five different players scored for the Golden Eagles in the stretch with junior Emily Zartman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) scoring twice for Brockport. Nina Tassone (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker), Molly Fitzsimmons (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) each scored once in the six-goal run.
Keene answered with a pair of goals but Brockport scored three more quick goals over the next four minutes to regain control Piraino, Zartman and freshman Erin Featherstone (Tully, NY/Tully) scored for Brockport with Zartman and Featherstone scoring on free position shots.
Keene scored the final three goals of the game for the final score.
Piraino had seven points with her four goals and three assists. Zartman added three goals, Brown had two goals and an assist, Tassone added a goal and two assists while Scordo was credited with a pair of goals.
Hannah O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) played a majority of the game in the Brockport goal and made five saves while Bree Galloway (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker) played the final five minutes.
