Amy Whitbeck Takes Fifth at US Open

Brockport senior qualifies for the 2012 Olympic Trials

Amy Whitbeck placed fifth at the US Open and qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials
Senior Amy Whitbeck (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) scored three consecutive wins before falling in the championship semifinal and ended up placing fifth overall in the 55kg weight class at the Senior Women's US Open Tournament in mid-December in Arlington, Texas. The fifth-place finish qualified her for a spot at the 2012 US Olympic Trials that will be held April 20 in Iowa City, Iowa.
 
Whitbeck, wrestling in the 55 kg weight class, defeated Ashley Hudson, Alicia Hubbard and Haley Augello in her first three matches of the tournament before falling to the top-ranked and eventual champion Helen Maroulis in the semifinal round.
 
In the consolation bracket, Whitbeck lost a criteria decision to Katherine Fulp-Allen but recovered to score a 2-0, 0-1, 3-0 victory over Schuyler Brown in the fifth-place match.
 
In the most recent rankings, updated after the US Open competition, Whitbeck is ranked No. 8 in the 55 kg division.
