Three wrestlers from The College at Brockport are still alive in the championship brackets of the varsity division after one day of competition at the New York State Wrestling Championship Tournament Saturday at Cornell University in Ithaca. The varsity competition concludes Sunday and the junior varsity bracket completed its competition Saturday with freshman
Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) placing third in the 133-pound weight class for Brockport.
Senior
Tom Rispoli (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow), senior
Justin James (Spencerport, NY/Brockport) and junior
Paul Glover (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) all remain alive in the championship bracket at the semifinal stage of the tournament.
Brockport sits in ninth place as a team with 43.5 points. Army leads all teams with 91.5 points.
Rispoli and James each must face the top-seeded wrestler in their bracket in the semifinals as Rispoli will face Jake O'Hara from Columbia University at 157 pounds and James will battle Ryan Fox from Nassau Community College in the 165-pound semifinals. Glover will face the No. 3 seed Jace Bennett from Cornell University in his semifinal match.
In the consolation bracket of the varsity division tournament,
Clay Neivert (Ossining, NY/Ossining) at 174 pounds and
John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) in the 285-pound class remain alive in the consolation quarterfinals as action resumes Sunday.
On Saturday, Ellis posted wins of 13-4 and 8-2 in the 133-pound bracket before falling in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Ellis scored a 16-9 victory and then was awarded third place after an injury default victory at 5:33 of the match against Oneonta's Sean Hanson.
