Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) drove the lane and sank a short jumper with less than four seconds left in the game to give The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team a 70-69 lead but Hobart College used a long inbounds pass and converted a layup as time expired to take a 71-70 victory Friday night in the second round of the Wendy's College Classic Tournament at RIT.
Hobart (5-0) advances to the championship game while Brockport (1-4) will play in the tournament consolation game at 3 pm Saturday at RIT.
The two teams played a close first half with four lead changes but a late 8-0 run by the Statesmen gave Hobart a 10-point lead at the halftime intermission with a 36-26 advantage.
Freshman
Lance Legister (Staten Island, NY/Millbrook School) came off the bench to score 18 points including 10 in the first half to pace the early Brockport attack. Williams was held to just two points in the opening 20 minutes of action but scored 17 second-half points and led all Brockport scorers with 19. He also had a team-leading nine rebounds while
Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) added 13 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Hobart held its advantage for the early stages of the second half retaining a 10-point lead at 47-37 with 12:55 remaining in the half. Brockport scored the next eight consecutive points as Legister and Williams each converted three-point plays to trim the lead to just two points at 47-45 at the 10:58 mark of the second half.
The Statesmen retained the slim lead as the advantage fluctuated between two and five points for the next seven minutes but a 15-foot jumper by Green with 3:58 left in the half tied the score at 60-60 and a layup by Green a minute later gave Brockport its first lead of the second half at 64-62.
After Hobart tied the score with a jumper from just inside the 3-point line, Legister drained a 3-pointer to make it a 67-64 Brockport lead with 2:24 left.
After another Hobart jumper cut the lead to one, Green hit the second of two free throws with 1:39 left to give the Golden Eagles a 68-66 lead.
A 3-pointer by Hobart returned the lead to the Statesmen at 69-68 with 33 seconds remaining. After a missed shot by Brockport and a quick foul to stop the clock, Hobart missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw situation and Brockport called timeout to draw up a final shot with 19 seconds left on the clock.
Williams worked the ball around the perimeter with Legister and
John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) and Williams drove the lane as the clock dipped below the 10-second mark hitting a running jumper with just four seconds left in the contest.
Hobart used a timeout to design its own final play and used a long inbounds pass that traveled three-quarters the length of the court to the 3-point line at the other end of the court. A quick hand-off pass to Hobart's Matt Pebole who was sprinting up the court left him in a position to drive to the basket for the layup as time expired on the clock to give Hobart the victory.
