LaDonya Rolle (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored six points and had a team and season-high seven rebounds in a losing effort as The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team dropped its first round game of the 19th annual Wendy's College Classic against the University of Rochester 75-33. The Golden Eagles will face Nazareth in the consolation bracket at 6 pm Thursday at St. John Fisher.
Brockport started the game off in the right direction, keeping the score close against the Yellowjackets - ranked #5 in the latest national poll according to
D3Hoops.com. An early three pointer by
Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) gave Brockport a 7-6 advantage in the opening minutes of the game. That would be the last lead of the game for the Golden Eagles as Rochester put together a 31-12 run to close out the first half, heading into the lockerroom with a 37-19 halftime lead.
Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) came off the bench to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring with seven points. Rolle contributed a season-high 18 minutes off the bench.
Brockport did force 19 Yellowjacket turnovers which led to 16 points and collected 11 steals. Rochester used its size advantage down low to outrebound the Golden Eagles 48-23.
In the other matchups of the Wendy's Classic, Roberts Wesleyan College defeated Geneseo 76-71 while RIT defeated St. John Fisher to advance to the second round. Roberts Wesleyan and RIT will square off at RIT at 8 pm Thursday. St. John Fisher will face Geneseo at 8 pm at St. John Fisher on Thursday. William Smith College defeated Nazareth 60-55 in overtime to advance to the second round to play Rochester at 6 pm at RIT.
